Publication Ethics & Malpractice Statement

Al-Madina: Journal of Islamic Law requires that all parties involved in the publication process — authors, editors, reviewers and the publisher — follow ethical and professional responsibilities. This statement summarizes our policies on publication ethics and the actions we take in cases of suspected misconduct.

The journal operates in accordance with widely accepted international standards for publication ethics to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidance. Authors, reviewers and editors are expected to act honestly, transparently and fairly.

Duties of authors

Authors must:

  • Ensure the submitted work is original, not published elsewhere, and not under consideration by another journal (no redundant or duplicate submissions).
  • Provide accurate, complete and honest reporting of methods and results. Fabrication, falsification or selective reporting are unacceptable.
  • Disclose all sources of funding and any potential conflicts of interest.
  • Assign authorship only to those who made a substantive intellectual contribution, and ensure all listed authors approve the final version and submission.
  • Obtain necessary ethical approvals and informed consent for research involving humans or animals and include a statement in the manuscript.
  • Provide, upon reasonable request, data and materials necessary to verify reported results, subject to legal and ethical constraints.

Duties of reviewers

Reviewers are expected to:

  • Treat manuscripts as confidential documents and not to share, copy, or use information for their personal advantage.
  • Declare any conflict of interest and decline to review if a significant conflict exists.
  • Provide honest, constructive, and timely evaluations, focusing on intellectual content and scientific validity.
  • Avoid personal criticism and base recommendations on evidence and argument.

Duties of editors and the editorial office

Editors must:

  • Make decisions based on relevance, originality, and scholarly merit, independent of commercial, political or personal considerations.
  • Apply the journal’s peer review policy consistently and ensure a fair and timely review process.
  • Protect the confidentiality of submissions and reviewer identities (as applicable to the journal’s peer-review model).
  • Recuse themselves from handling manuscripts where a conflict of interest exists and appoint an alternative handling editor.
  • Follow established procedures when handling allegations of misconduct.

Conflicts of interest

All contributors (authors, reviewers, editors) must disclose any financial or non-financial interests that might influence, or be perceived to influence, their work. Disclosures should appear in the manuscript where relevant.

Plagiarism, duplicate publication and originality checks

Manuscripts are screened for plagiarism and substantial similarity to other works. Unattributed reuse of text, ideas, data, or images is unacceptable. Duplicate submission or publication without disclosure is prohibited and may result in rejection or retraction.

Ethical oversight for research

Manuscripts reporting research involving human participants or animals must state the source of ethical approval, the name of the approving body, and include a statement on informed consent where applicable. Research that fails to meet accepted ethical standards may be rejected.

Data availability and image integrity

Authors are encouraged to make primary data available where possible (subject to confidentiality and privacy concerns) and to include a data availability statement. Manipulation of images or figures that misrepresents data is not permitted.

Handling allegations of misconduct

If concerns arise about the integrity of a published or submitted work, the journal follows a fair and proportionate process:

  • An initial assessment is performed by the editorial office to establish the nature and source of the concern.
  • Authors and, where appropriate, reviewers or institutions will be contacted to request explanation and supporting materials.
  • Investigations will follow best practice and may involve the author’s institution or other bodies if necessary.
  • Possible outcomes include: correction (erratum/corrigendum), expression of concern, retraction, rejection, or no action if allegations are disproved. In cases of proven serious misconduct the journal may notify the author’s institution and relevant bodies.

The journal reserves the right to publish corrections or retraction notices that explain the reasons for those actions.

Corrections, retractions and expressions of concern

When significant errors or misconduct are confirmed, the journal will issue the appropriate public notice (correction, retraction, or expression of concern). Retraction notices clearly identify the retracted article and state the reason for retraction.

Confidentiality

All persons involved in handling manuscripts must keep the contents of submissions and the identity of reviewers confidential, except where required by law or agreed by the parties.

Sanctions

Breaches of this policy may result in actions including: rejection of manuscripts, retraction of published articles, notification to employers or funders, and temporary or permanent bans on submission or reviewing.

Complaints and appeals

Authors who believe a decision was reached improperly may submit a concise appeal to the Editorial Office with supporting evidence. Appeals are reviewed by senior editorial staff or an independent editorial committee not involved in the original decision.

How to report concerns

To report suspected ethical problems or malpractice, please send a clear description including:

  • Article title, authors and DOI/ID (if available)
  • A concise description of the concern and any supporting evidence (screenshots, links, files)
  • Your name and contact details (reports can be anonymous but providing contact information may assist investigation)

Send reports to: shishya@nayottamareswara.co.id or use the journal’s contact form.

This policy is implemented by the Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Office. The journal may update this statement to reflect developing standards and legal requirements; the latest version will be available on the journal website.
